You can’t lecture someone into trust. But when Waller County officers, PVAMU undergrads, and neighborhood families share a table, something shifts that no programme could manufacture.
Breaking bread without an agenda is the most restorative technology we have found in eight years of this work.
Once a season we put a smoker in the lot behind Bledsoe Street and invite whoever turns up — Waller County deputies off shift, Prairie View A&M undergrads between exams, families from two streets over. Nobody signs in. Nobody gets a pitch.
What happens instead is slower and more durable. People who only ever meet each other across a desk or a traffic stop end up passing a plate. By the third or fourth gathering, a participant who would never walk into an office has a deputy’s phone number, and a landlord has met the young man whose application he would otherwise have filed under risk.
