The freshman we almost said no to
“If I hadn’t lived in your housing, if I hadn’t been part of this ministry, I wouldn’t have had the family and the support to get through. I would be either in jail, dead, or working fast food. That was the trajectory of my life.”
— A graduate of our program (Teacher of the Year, Prairie View, TX)
We’d had bad experiences with freshmen in our housing and had decided not to take any more. Then a pastor recommended a seventeen-year-old, and we made an exception.
It was not a smooth four years. He had a bumpy road and there were moments it could have gone the other way. He graduated. He met his wife through this ministry. They both became teachers. They both finished master’s degrees. He was named teacher of the year.
He has a child now, and a classroom full of other people’s children. That is what we mean when we ask what the impact of our impact is.
