“A place to sleep is the foundation of everything else.”
Financial aid doesn’t arrive until weeks into a semester, but a deposit and first month’s rent are due before you can move in. That gap is why people end up on couches and in cars. We underwrite the move-in so it stops being the reason.
Prairie View A&M is known for overselling its dorms. Students arrive from other states on check-in day and find there is no room for them — suddenly homeless in a state they’ve never lived in. We’ve put two strangers into an empty apartment and asked the community for furniture. We’d rather do that than let someone sleep in a car.
