Eye Exams, Clean Lenses, and Seeing the Board for the First Time
Ten participants could not see properly last year. Some were weeks from failing the vision test for a driver’s licence. One did not know trees had leaves.
It is the least photogenic work we do and it changes the most.
Last year ten of our participants could not see properly. Two were weeks away from failing the vision portion of a driver’s licence test — which in Waller County means no licence, which means no job. One young man, fitted with his first pair of prescription lenses at twenty-two, told us he had not known that trees had individual leaves.
Eye exams, frames, dental copays, and the paperwork nobody explains. Unglamorous, and the hinge on which a semester turns.
