Relational Scaffolding

Celebrating Birthdays When Nobody Else Kept Track

Many of our participants have never had a birthday cake. So we throw the party — and we write the date down where somebody will see it next year.

Ask a participant when their birthday is and you will often get a pause before the answer. Not because they have forgotten, but because nobody has asked in a while.

Many of the young adults we walk with have never had a cake with their name on it. So we throw the party — graduations, birthdays, Christmas, the small wins nobody else marked — and we write the date in the shared calendar so it comes round again next year without anyone having to ask.

That is the part that lasts after the crisis is over.
